March Madness 2019: UMBC tweets congrats to Virginia on championship

Virginia fans flooded social media to celebrate the Cavaliers’ national championship Monday night after their epic 85-77 overtime win over Texas Tech.

Almost lost in the flood of UVA tweets was this gem from UMBC.

“What an incredible season for UVA. That was truly a turnaround for the ages! Congratulations, champs!” the tweet read.

That, of course, would be the same UMBC team that stunned the Cavaliers in the Round of 64 in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, as Virginia became the first No. 1 seed in tournament history to lose to a No. 16 seed.

Virginia’s NCAA championship run in the 2019 tourney helped alleviate the sting of that loss, but that upset was rehashed throughout the tournament, on social media, by reporters, and during broadcasts of the Cavaliers’ games.

But while those reminders were painful to the Cavs and their fans, they only enhanced the reputation of the UMBC Retrievers, as their upset was mentioned again and again.

It was a nice gesture on their part to reach out to the Cavs in their moment of glory.
